Need help recovering from lack luster app sales, read some tips from other successful developers and app marketers.

Every iPhone developer dreams of making that #1 selling AppStore app and some make it, but to be quite frank this is so rarely the case. Alot of developers make a masterpiece (or something not even close to it) just to realize one say every few days, it’s discouraging. So what to do to recover from lack luster sales? Well a few developers with success stories and a marketers have shared their stories below to help those apps that just can’t seem to not do well in the AppStore see another light of day. Hey, maybe a tip or two will help your app recover!

Alan Ringvald shares his story:

Our iNDA app lets users create and sign custom non-disclosure agreements. We launched this app in November of last year for $4.99, but barely got our friends to download it! Then, in mid-april, we decided to make the app free to hopefully get more exposure. Within a day of making the app free, we received over 1,000 downloads and reached the #25 free business app in the US in April 2010 and the top 100 free business app in 18 countries. Now with this new exposure, we have lots of legal and online signature companies interested in acquiring the app.

Craig of Caruso Apps:
After a hurtful winter of only making $4.80 in December, I set on a quest to promote my app. I read a lot of blogs and made my own recovery plan during this time. I lowered my app to 99 cents from the $1.99 it was originally selling for and made user suggested changes to improve the quality of the app. After these changes were made I saw a slight increase but was still not happy. During March I made my own Twitter account for iLineup (twitter.com/iLineup). Since my app is baseball focused I decided to use hashtagging – a community-driven convention for adding additional context and metadata to your tweets.

By using #baseball, #coaches, #softball, #fielding and some other tags I saw a huge growth in my app. I think the start of the 2010 MLB season really helped me kick off my sales. The hashtag of my app was looked at by a local minor league baseball team and I worked with them at an event in June.
My advice to all developers is, if your app is sports driven, release it before the season starts and not in the middle since you will only make half the profit. If you start ahead of the game, you’re bound to win!

151 Ventures , a marketing and sales consulting firm that helps mobile software companies and application developers take their products to market and drive sales and revenue points out a few things that will help developers increase visibility, make their apps more discoverable, and increase downloads/purchases.

1. PAY ATTENTION TO REVIEWS AND RATINGS AND ADDRESS ANY COMMON BUGS MENTIONED

iTunes is not a beta testing ground and you should ideally fix any and all bugs prior to launch. Consumers will get your apps and leave public reviews and feedback with problems they have and bad reviews can hurt ratings and downloads/sales. If you’ve already launched, fix the bug and revise the top of the description letting people know that the issues have been resolved. Also, responding to user feedback with an update shows your user base that they matter and that you listen to their feedback, which can often result in them changing negative ratings and fosters better responses from new, prospective users.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT CATEGORY AND/OR CHANGE CATEGORIES IF YOU NEED TO.

The “most relevant” category is not always the best one, especially if it’s a crowded category. Figure out the best combination of category relevancy and visibility, so your app has a better chance of getting into the “Top Listed” apps for that category.

3. ADD A “LITE” OR “PREMIUM” VERSION.

In iTunes, you can’t have the same app in more than one category. But you can have similar apps in different categories, so add/remove a feature of your app and create a new “lite” or “premium” version of it in another area of the store to maximize your reach and visibility across iTunes.

4. REVISE PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS WITH RELEVANT KEYWORDS AND WRITING STYLE

Make sure that your product descriptions are in a writing style that appeals to your target audience. In many cases, this is not a laundry list of product features or technical functionality but a highlight of key features AND benefits to the end user. Also, make sure that the description includes relevant keywords based on the type of product you have, the category and potentially even competitive products. You can find these keywords by seeing the auto-suggested searches in the iTunes search box, by looking at popular competitive apps, or even doing a Google search on your product type.

5. CHANGE THE PRICE AND TEST DIFFERENT PRICE POINTS

A lot of times app pricing and consumer valuation just don’t match up. That’s why you need to adjust pricing and see what price point drives the most total revenue. Remember that getting a lot of users at a lower price point, can be much more lucrative than fewer users at a high price point, or vice versa. It is crucial to test different price points so you can see the market response and adjust your strategy and pricing accordingly.

If you are developer or even a iPhone, iPod , or iPad app user, what are some tips you would add?

Apple this week announced the winners of its annual Design Awards at the Worldwide Developers Conference, highlighting some of the best applications written for iOS.
The winners of this years awards were represented by five applications written for the iPad, and five for the iPhone. They were selected among the more than 225,000 options on the App Store, which has earned developers more than $1 billion to date.

This year’s Design Awards did not include a category for Mac OS X applications, further demonstrating that the focus of WWDC 2010 is iOS, which powers the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

Winners were selected based on criteria including design, technical excellence, innovation, quality, technology adoption and performance. Nominations were accepted through Apple’s website by members of the iPhone Developer Program

The awards ceremony was followed this week by MacStories, which provided a full list of the winners, also included below with iTunes links:

Learn about Ultralingua and their dictionary lookup apps for the iPhone and iPad.

Ultralingua

Q. How long have you been developing for the iPhone/iPod platform?
Since the summer of 2008 – we were the first bilingual dictionary apps in the App Store when it launched!

Q. Describe your app(s)?
We have 23 apps in the App Store, all of which are used for dictionary lookup, language translation, and verb conjugation. Because they don’t require an internet connection and are available in a variety of languages, they can be used by anyone.

Q. Who is/are your app(s) for?
Our apps are great for people who love languages – especially language students, professional translators, and international travelers. Ultralingua translation dictionaries are popular because the entries have a lot of depth, and because they come with a verb conjugation tool. Our verb conjugator helps language learners master tough things like irregular verbs and tenses, and can even serve as a complete reference for native speakers.

We also recently launched a free app for the Haitian earthquake relief effort. It helps English and Haitian Creole speakers communicate, with a translation dictionary, audio phrasebook, and anthropological reference guide. 80% of the population of Haiti speaks Creole, and many relief workers are struggling with the language barrier. This app puts the power of language directly at the fingertips of the relief workers, so they don’t need to rely on the presence of a human translator. http://bit.ly/aJOZjx

What did you do before developing for the iPhone/iPod platform?
We started with a French-English dictionary for Mac in 1997, and from there added more bilingual dictionaries for Mac. We soon had apps for Windows, Windows Mobile, Palm, and the web, but our iPhone and Mac apps have always been the most popular.

Q. Do you have any cool future projects in the pipeline? Provide as much detail about the project you are willing to discuss.
We are always working on adding languages to our list, and we have a couple big ones coming soon. Also, because our iPad apps are so new, we are looking forward to hearing from our users about what they would like to see next. We believe strongly in customer-driven development, and although we can’t make every user request a reality, we do our best to improve our apps using input from our customers.

Q. Anything you want iPhone users to think about or realize when it comes to apps?
Although we carefully monitor our reviews in the App Store, we can’t actually respond to users questions or concerns there. It’s tricky, because we really want to be able to talk with our users about their ideas and answer their questions. We try to encourage people to email support or connect with us on twitter instead. http://twitter.com/ultralingua

Q. Are you looking for employees, partners, funding or anything that will help grow your company in the future?
We are always looking for brilliant people to join our team, and are actually looking to fill a few positions right now. If you live in the Minneapolis area and love language, you should email us at business (at) ultralingua (dot) com

10. What iPhone/iPod tip would you like to give our iPhone users?
It’s simple to turn on international keyboards, and they can make using apps like ours a lot easier. From your home screen, just visit: Settings > General settings > Keyboard > International keyboards. Special characters (like accented letters) are easy to use, too, just tap and hold a letter on the keyboard to see alternatives.

Q. What are your favorite iPhone apps besides your own?
We can’t get enough of cat piano around the office – the occasional musical “meow” has been known to make an appearance during staff meetings.

Apps for Child Development

Baby Faces, It’s Potty Time! , Bed Time

3) What did you do before developing for the iPhone/iPod platform?

We were all successful in other industries. Our one common thread is that we belong to the market we serve. We are moms who discovered a way to develop apps that make a difference in people’s lives.

Jennifer Noonan – Started in entertainment PR for HBO and then founded Naissance on Melrose (NOM) a popular maternity store on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood. I did this for ten years. Before that, I was in entertainment PR for HBO.

Cara Hall – I was an advertising executive, living the cubicle life while developing high-profile campaigns for Lexus, America West Airlines and Heal the Bay.

Jesse Douglas – I still own The Reel Inn, a well-known restaurant in the Topanga Canyon in the Los Angeles area. Apps are something I am passionate about.

4) What’s the greatest and worst thing about developing for the iPhone and iPod?

The greatest thing is that developing apps is really fun. We work from home with people from all over the world. We get to stretch our creativity and see our ideas come to life. App development is still a relatively young (new) field that is always changing. So it’s exciting and dynamic. We get immediate feedback from the market and can use that to make our apps better.

The worst thing is that the industry does change so fast. It’s challenging to keep up with all of the new technologies and rules. These things can change when you are right in the middle of creating an app. If you want the new functionality or technology in the app, you have to retool. Apple is very secretive about innovations that they are developing and what is coming next. So there is a lot of guesswork. Retooling can cost money. But it’s worth it because it’s important to stay current and release the best app possible.

5) What were your major problems when releasing your iPhone app?

We have been very fortunate not to run into the biggest problem in app development, not receiving approval. We have been very fortunate with approvals. It helps that our apps are not controversial or adult-oriented. We are very careful with licensing to assure that we can prove our relationship with The Grateful Dead or the YouTube sensation, Eric Herman. Another issue some people run into is that they try to be too cutting edge or compete directly with similar services that Apple already offers. Those people will probably run into major problems. We try to avoid that.

6) Do you intend on making an iPad app?

We do. We are in the process of making one as we speak. We think the best feature of the iPad is going to be the reading function. So we are creating a children’s interactive book based on a character we are developing. We are developing the first phase of the character for an iPhone app but are expanding to iPad and creating the digital literature just for the iPad.

7) Do you have any cool future projects in the pipeline? Provide as much detail about the project you are willing to discuss.

The children’s interactive book is the most innovative usage of the iPad platform that we are building currently. It’s going to be a graphically rich experience with a charming story. There will be learning components, language learning skills with short words and phrases in French. The character is named Esme and the name of the iPad app will be Esme in Paris. It is based on the iPhone app that we are currently working on called Esme’s Paper Dolls. We have a lot of very successful dress up apps that have laid the groundwork for the launch of Esme and her iPad exclusive interactive books.

Our tween fashion apps have all been in the Top 50 of the App Store at least once since they have launched.

8 . Anything you want iPhone users to think about or realize when it comes to apps?

Developers actually listen to legitimate comments that are placed on the store. Most developers listen and update their apps to serve the market. They don’t listen when the comments are negative, nasty or just plain flaming.

The best apps are not free. There are a lot of free apps on the iStore. Just remember, sometimes you get what you pay for.

9) Are you looking for employees, partners, funding or anything that will help grow your company in the future?

We are actively seeking cross-promotional partners. For example, we are getting ready to launch a cheerleading app and want to team up with American Cheerleading Magazine. We find that these kinds of partnerships are very helpful for reaching the correct audience who will be interested in our app.

10) What iPhone/iPod tip would you like to give our iPhone users?

Use the features of your iPhone. Here’s a nifty trick if your app doesn’t have a save button or you want to do a screen capture. Hit your home button and your power button at the same time and it will take a picture of your screen. Then you can save that picture to your photo album. So even if the app doesn’t have a save button, you can save the image yourself and reference it later. The iPhone has many cool features. Read about more of them in your user guide and try them out. It’s fun!

11) What are your favorite iPhone apps besides your own?

ZenBound – The ultimate relaxing way to spend your time.

Geocaching – Global treasure hunting game, Cara’s son loves it.

Facebook – Because it’s convenient

Interview with Craig Caruso of CarusoApps

Q: How long have you been developing for the iPhone/iPod platform?

1 year

Q: Describe your app(s)?

We have a baseball team management app – iLineup, an app for NJ home buyers, and an informative app for Dock Street – one of Staten Island, NY’s most popular bars.

Q: Who is/are your app(s) for? –

Depending on which app, they apply to a wide audience. Everyone from baseball fans to new home buyers to bar hoppers.

Q: What did you do before developing for the iPhone/iPod platform? –

I work for a VoIP company and develop for the iPhone on the side.

Q: What’s the greatest and worst thing about developing for the iPhone and iPod? –

The app approval process has to have increased sales for Tylenol and Advil….

Q: What were your major problems when releasing your iPhone app? –

As stated above, the app approval process was somewhat difficult. But once over that hurdle, finding all the bugs and correcting them in a timely manner was probably the only real problem I had.

Q: Do you intend on making an iPad app? –

Yes. I intend to revamp iLineup to run natively on the iPad.

Q: Do you have any cool future projects in the pipeline?

Of course we do! We’re working on a simple, but addicting, game as well as some other apps.

Q: Anything you want iPhone users to think about or realize when it comes to app ?

– I just hope they realize the amazing deals that they’re getting on the majority of these apps. So much work goes into them behind the scenes so that all the end user has to do is download and tap! It’s worth every single cent of the $1 or $2 paid for the average app.

Q: Are you looking for employees, partners, funding or anything that will help grow your company in the future? –

We’re always looking for ways to expand our business, so if you’ve got an idea feel free to present it to us!

Q: What iPhone/iPod tip would you like to give our iPhone users? –

Reboot your phone once in a while. If it is acting slow, it’s not breaking! It’s just running out of memory and needs a refresh. It is a mini-computer, after all.

Q: What are your favorite iPhone apps besides your own? –

Words With Friends, TweetDeck, Facebook, eBay… The list could go on and on!

We’ve heard too many times about today’s economic state and that’s all fine and dandy, but you have one money saving tool that an unfortunate few (teehee had to sneak that one in) doesn’t have – an iPhone or iPod. That’s right, your iPhone or iPod Touch can be one of your best money saving weapons in your arsenal. Yes, your iPhone or iPod Touch cost you one pretty penny and it will continue to as Apple continues to roll out wonderful updates for the iPhone and iPod Touch in the future, but with these handy apps and websites made just for your beautiful, handy, money saving machine – get ready to save the big bucks.

#1 – CellFire

This app brings the coupons with you to the store. By having your iPhone or iPod Touch loaded with Cellfire you will ALWAYS have savings right in your pocket, without tediously clipping a thing. It’s so easy to use and of course saves the bucks. Simply select your grocery store, enter your shopping card number, choose the coupons you want to use and BAM the coupons will be ready to use from your phone in minutes. Check out the app, it’s FREE!

#2 – Coupons.com

Almost the same principle as CellFire except not as neatly executed, but still a money saving app. Simply download the app, select the coupons you want to use in the future, and enter your email address. The Coupons.com app will then send a link to your email with the select coupons you wanted to print. Like I said, not as intuitive, but as every serious couponer knows, the coupons found on Coupons.com are must haves.

#3 – Loan Calculator

No not a fun, entertaining spectacle app. It’s so straight forward you would hate not to use it. Loan Calculator is quite frankly what the app name implies, use this as you go and purchase that new BMW 335i Coupe and realize how much your ‘I got to have it car‘ will cost you exactly. Even when you find yourself browsing homes, get the price off that sales flyer and whip some calculations together to realize just how much you will be giving your favorite mortgagee in free money as interest.

#4 – Yowza

What coupons CellFire and Coupons.com don’t handle, Yowza seems to. Yowza follows the same principle as CellFire, with more of a focus towards entertainment or big box retail shops, i.e restaurants, linen shopping, etc. for savings. Get this app to fill in where CellFire and Coupons.com leave off!

#5 – Mint.com

Do you always remember to pay EVERY bill on time? How about checking the interest rates on your credit cards often to see if you are getting the best rate? If you are that dedicated finance god or goddess , great for you – you can still use Mint. Mint is easier to describe for what it doesn’t do. Mint does not pay your bills for you, there I said it! Mint is definitely one of my favorite money saving apps - it tracks your payments, tracks every expense you make (yes even those fast food runs you always want to deny to yourself that you aren’t making) , notifies you of interest and fees paid, notifies you whether you’re going over budget or not , and of course much much more. Get it….it’s free, has a nifty website counterpart, and of course will save you money.

#6 – Gift Card

Have you ever received a gift card for the holidays or a birthday and realized later that you didn’t bring the card with you, don’t know the expiration or the balance of that particular card? Well, Gift Card is going to become your new best friend. Gift Card for the iPhone and iPod Touch tracks everything plus some when it comes to your gift cards. You can even take and store a photo of both sides of the card and track each transaction you made on each gift card. So helpful and so on time. Now all your favorite retail stores can forget about you contributing to the billions of dollars they earn off of unused gift card balances!

Well go and save money! You are going to need it to buy that NEW iPhone or iPod Touch that Apple is always coming out with. Hey you can even save those extra dollars and tuck it away for your new iPad.

Make sure you save your favorite iPhone and iPod money saving apps and tips. We can totally make a part 2 to this!

It can be used as an excuse to get out of uneasy situations or simply trick friends with its realistic conversations. Set an iPhone to “call” itself at any time and initiate four preset conversations or custom recordings. An array of advanced settings leaves users able to completely emulate an actual phone call.

The free Fake-A-Call application from Excelltech Mobile, allows users to activate a fake phone call immediately or at a preset time. It can be used as an excuse to get out of uneasy situations or simply trick friends with its realistic conversations.

“Long meetings, first dates, high-pressure salespersons – there are many moments in life that leave us hoping for a phone call. I wanted to make an application that ensured I wouldn’t have to leave that call to chance,” said Ed Williams, Excelltech Mobile designer.

Apparently he’s not the only one who wanted to summon a call at will – the application has been downloaded by over two million people since it’s September 2009 release. Reviews left on iTunes credit the application with such things as getting out of work meetings to faking celebrity hookups.

Originally featuring just an incoming call screen, Fake-a-Call has established itself as a top 100 utilities application by providing consistent updates and feature additions. The application now features four fake conversations that engage in common dialogues such as a boss requesting a report or a friend calling for a ride. Users can also record and save their own fake conversations creating more realistic and customized exchanges. Advanced settings including speakerphone, ring tones, and caller name help fool the most skeptical of people.

Device Requirements:
iPhone and iPod touch 3.0 or later

Pricing and Availability:
Fake-A-Call Free 3.01 is available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Utilities category.

After reading that Apple did so well with sales in October, I wanted to write a blog post for the newbies out there. So here are five tips for the iPhone and iPod Touch Newbies.

#1 – How to Delete Items in Your Email or on a list

You are not going to believe how simple this is to do. It’s so in your face, when I found out when I first got my iPhone a year ago, I laughed. To delete items from a list or within your email, simply swipe your finger across the item you want to delete. A red “Delete” button will appear , tap the delete button, and it’s gone. I know, too easy!

#2 -Emailing Multiple Photos

Those cute photos you took of yourself, your kid, your dog, whomever MUST be sent to everyone, they are just too adorable to stay on your iPhone or iPod Touch. So don’t send just one pic at a time, send them all (well 5, you can’t do any more than that yet on the iPhone).

Tap on the Photos app.

Tap on your camera roll.

At the bottom of the screen, press the arrow button in the bottom left corner on your screen.

Select the photos you want to share and tap “Share” when you are done.

Select the method in which you want to share and it is as good as sent.

#3 -Take a Screen shot

You have something cool on your iPhone or iPod Touch that you want to show your friends, so take a screen shot of it. Simply hold your home button and the power button (the small silver button at the top of your device) and your screen shot will be taken.

#4 – How to download apps and Redeem Promo Codes

Those commercials featuring all those cool app had you sold. Now you just have to figure out how to download them. Luckily, this is simple. Simply:

Tap on the App Store icon on your iPhone or iPod Touch home screen.

Browse by category or search.

Tap the app icon and press the button that shows the price.

It will instantly download the app and install it on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Were you lucky enough to get a promo code for an app, just need to know how to redeem it:

From your iPhone or iPod Touch:

Open the AppStore

Tap on Featured from the bottom menu bar.

Scroll all the way down the list until you see the word “Redeem”.

Put in the code and press “Redeem”!

#5 – How to Delete Apps

So you’ve download an app and hate it or just realized it’s not for you, well luckily it’s easy to delete. Simply hold down the icon for a few seconds you want to delete. All of your apps will start to shake and will have an “X” on them. Tap the “X” mark on the app you want to delete and it’s gone.

Press your “Home” button to when you are done.

It is nearing final exams time and you know more about what you are going to eat for the holidays than you do about the plot of the “Pride and Prejudice” . If you want a chance at earning that degree pick up your iPhone or iPod Touch and these apps to get you through finals and on to good eating and family arguments convo.

Stanza – Did you just skim an assigned title and need to actually read the book before the finals now? If you do, Stanza is for you. Stanza gives you access to hundreds of books directly on your iPhone, it’s a must have app if you still want to hang out with your friends or have to run errands and need to read a book on the go.

Voicenote – When your teacher is going over the final exam study guide for the last time, you want to make sure you hear everything he/she mentions, you can’t do that if you are also taking notes. Voicenote allows you to sit back and watch everyone else sweat it out. Record everything you teacher says and take your notes.

Graphing Calculator – Your teacher may not allow you to use your helpful iPhone or iPod Touch during the finals, but it’s a great way to prep for applying those formulas on finals day.
So you want your own piece of the iPhone app pie, well it’s gonna cost you! Brice Milliorn of JMBJBM, LLC is giving everyone the opportunity to own their own iPhone business for just $100,000, (well that’s just the starting bid on eBay). But everyone don’t get your checkbook out at once, Brice is only selling his venture with 87 apps because he wants time to focus on his family and if you don’t have the money to market the app, he suggest not wasting your time.

Let’s see everything you get for $100,000 shall we…view all the details in the official press release after the jump.

Texas based independent developer Brice Milliorn today announced the sale of JBMJBM, LLC. This is a well established company whose sole purpose is creating consumer applications for the iPhone platform. The business is currently listed for sale on eBay as a 10 day auction. 87 apps in all, some of his best-selling applications are Friday Night Lights, iSpy Game, iReferee, iSexyRef, iSexyRef2, Pro Rodeo Fan, Sit Up Counter, Shake 2 Count & several College oriented apps for sports enthusiasts.

Independent developer Brice Milliorn today announced the sale of JBMJBM, LLC. JBMJBM is a well established company whose sole purpose is creating consumer applications for the iPhone platform. JBMJBM has seen an explosive growth in just under a year, and offers a stable of high quality, well developed applications that are mixed in scope and genre.

Some of Brice’s best-selling applications are Friday Night Lights, iSpy Game, iReferee, iSexyRef, iSexyRef2, Pro Rodeo Fan, Sit Up Counter, Shake 2 Count as well as several College oriented applications for sports enthusiasts, and many more. All applications are currently listed on the App Store and are selling now.

“In an incredible short time, JBMJBM has simply grown out of my hands,” said Brice Milliorn, founder of JBMJBM LLC. “I have found that I am taking time away from my young family. Establishing JBMJBM as an LLC in July of 2009, I have sold over 30,000 applications in my short tenure as an iPhone programmer. Because of my limited time that I am able to give to this business, I am unable to properly market what I have. If an interested party has time to market them, their results should be much better.”

This single purchase lands the prospective party 87 applications, currently listed on the App Store. JBMJBM will transition all application assets into the party’s name or into their business name. Interested parties are bidding on the source code files, website files, and all collateral (in other words, the whole kit and caboodle) for all 87 apps from JBMJBM.

Best-selling applications:
* Friday Night Lights
* iSpy Game
* iReferee
* iSexyRef
* iSexyRef2
* Pro Rodeo Fan
* Sit Up Counter
* Shake 2 Count
* And many more
* Plus several College sports applications

“As my knowledge grew and the word about my apps grew, I started getting inquires on making apps for other companies,” Milliorn continued. “I tested those waters as well and was able to make $10,000 plus on building other companies iPhone apps that they were requesting. I remain convinced that with the right people balance and great marketing, JBMJBM can be very successful in its own right.”

What’s Included:
* DVD Copy of All the 87 Apps Source Code
* Technical support and backup as need to ensure a smooth transition for two months
* Website File Transition to Buyers domain.

Due to family obligations, Brice is selling JBMJBM. The business is currently listed for sale on eBay as a 10 day auction. Starting bid $100,000. Interested parties are bidding on the source code files, website files, and all collateral (in other words, the whole kit and caboodle) for all 87 apps from JBMJBM. Interested parties should place a bid, or contact Brice as soon as possible.
