Q. How long have you been developing for the iPhone/iPod platform?
Since the summer of 2008 – we were the first bilingual dictionary apps in the App Store when it launched!

Q. Describe your app(s)?
We have 23 apps in the App Store, all of which are used for dictionary lookup, language translation, and verb conjugation. Because they don’t require an internet connection and are available in a variety of languages, they can be used by anyone.

Q. Who is/are your app(s) for?
Our apps are great for people who love languages – especially language students, professional translators, and international travelers. Ultralingua translation dictionaries are popular because the entries have a lot of depth, and because they come with a verb conjugation tool. Our verb conjugator helps language learners master tough things like irregular verbs and tenses, and can even serve as a complete reference for native speakers.

We also recently launched a free app for the Haitian earthquake relief effort. It helps English and Haitian Creole speakers communicate, with a translation dictionary, audio phrasebook, and anthropological reference guide. 80% of the population of Haiti speaks Creole, and many relief workers are struggling with the language barrier. This app puts the power of language directly at the fingertips of the relief workers, so they don’t need to rely on the presence of a human translator. http://bit.ly/aJOZjx

What did you do before developing for the iPhone/iPod platform?
We started with a French-English dictionary for Mac in 1997, and from there added more bilingual dictionaries for Mac. We soon had apps for Windows, Windows Mobile, Palm, and the web, but our iPhone and Mac apps have always been the most popular.

Q. Do you have any cool future projects in the pipeline? Provide as much detail about the project you are willing to discuss.
We are always working on adding languages to our list, and we have a couple big ones coming soon. Also, because our iPad apps are so new, we are looking forward to hearing from our users about what they would like to see next. We believe strongly in customer-driven development, and although we can’t make every user request a reality, we do our best to improve our apps using input from our customers.

Q. Anything you want iPhone users to think about or realize when it comes to apps?
Although we carefully monitor our reviews in the App Store, we can’t actually respond to users questions or concerns there. It’s tricky, because we really want to be able to talk with our users about their ideas and answer their questions. 10. What iPhone/iPod tip would you like to give our iPhone users?
It’s simple to turn on international keyboards, and they can make using apps like ours a lot easier. From your home screen, just visit: Settings > General settings > Keyboard > International keyboards. Special characters (like accented letters) are easy to use, too, just tap and hold a letter on the keyboard to see alternatives.

Q. What are your favorite iPhone apps besides your own?
We can’t get enough of cat piano around the office – the occasional musical “meow” has been known to make an appearance during staff meetings.

To all of those who love to know Mr. Job’s opinion on everything tech, this one is for you. This goes beyond the simple yes or no answers he usually provides in his email replies to those inquiring about things like Flash or the Mac’s place in the marketplace in the future. This is a sit down interview at the D8 Conference and he discusses in his totally expected black shirt, blue jean attire everything from Flash (of course) to the iPad’s origin.

Yet another “prediction” by the greats of the industry – the Analysts, that the iPad will outsell the Mac. As this is currently accurate because of it’s new release in the US only, a lot of people are still skeptical of such high predictions based on a month of “new gadget” hype.  The iPad in fact is still in high demand and is going for high prices on eBay. 

Currently the iPad in the US currently moves about 246,000 units per week and the Mac sells about 110,000 per week. Please keep in mind this is only considering U.S. iPad sells so it will be more once released internationally.

I think we all can agree that Apple has success in their favor with this device, but how much is the question? Some analysts predict that 8 million iPads will be sold during the year 2010, what do you think – too high or did the analyst hit it on the nail?

The guys over at BreakfastNY.com have created a modified BlimpDuino which is controlled by the iPad’s accelerometer through a custom software which connects to a built in computer. The iPad thus becomes the real controller which also displays what the blimp sees via an attached front camera.

With just under 6 billion mobile applications forecast to be downloaded this year, up from an estimated 2.4 billion in 2009 (Source: ABI Research), app development has no indication of slowing down. First weekend sales of the iPad estimated over 700,000 units and iPhone app developers are switching gears and rapidly turning to iPad app development.

In a survey of hundreds of iPhone app developers conducted by Optimum Lead Generation, the survey revealed:

* 88% of iPhone app developers surveyed anticipate the porting of existing iPhone Apps to iPad Apps
* 76% of iPhone app developers surveyed currently have at least 1 iPad App in development

“iPad application development represents new ground and opportunity for mobile developers” said Gregg Weiss, Founder of iPad Application Quotes. “Larger screen size, faster processor and richer user experiences are all reasons developers are excited about creating apps for the iPad”.

When asked why iPhone developers might continue to develop for iPhone vs move only to iPad, one developer said “Existing iPhone users might be more reluctant to spring another $500 for an iPad. That’s a big reason why I’m keeping with both platforms now”.

So multitasking is finally coming to (some) iPhones, iPod touches, and the iPad. This gives the user the ability to switch between applications without having to close one app in order to open another.

How it works

It will be as simple as double-clicking the home button on your device which will open a tray showing all running applications. Similar to the function you’re used to on your Mac (cmd + tab) and PC (alt + tab). So an example would be tapping a link within and email in Mail. Traditionally this would close Mail and launch the webpage within Safari. In the new OS, Mail would not close, but Safari would still open, allowing you to switch back to Mail when you’re done with Safari.

Apple also claims this will not deplete battery life or bog down your device. This is achieved by not giving all system resources available to every application that is open (which is how multi-tasking typically works). Instead, only the following specific actions are capable of doing this: background audio, voice over IP, background location, push notifications, local notifications, task completion, fast app switching.

Who can use it?

If you’re running on an iPhone 3GS or a 3rd Gen iPod Touch, then you’ll be able to enjoy this new feature of the OS. However original iPhone, iPhone 3G, and previous generation iPod Touch users will not get to use multitasking. This is not a shocker for original iPhone devices, but as the 3G is still on sale and one of the most popular of the devices, this is a bummer. The iPad will see this new OS and multitasking this Fall, while everyone else can see it this summer.
